Can Foods Really Be Aphrodisiacs?
Thursday, October 19, 2006

There are always stories floating around about food as an aphrodisiac. Some people swear by these foods for increasing their libido, others think it is just so much nonsense. Either way, what are the foods that are supposed to turn us on and why do they raise the libido?

The reasons that many foods are considered an aphrodisiac are because they fall under one of three categories. Some foods are considered to be aphrodisiacs because they are expensive. Others are considered to be aphrodisiacs because of the vitamins, amino acids, etc, that are contained in them. A third category of foods that are purported to be aphrodisiacs are because of the scent of the item. Each of the foods in these categories can supposedly have a direct impact on a person's level of arousal.

Of course, expensive foods top the list when it comes to aphrodisiacs. Champagne and strawberries are one of the top foods for getting people in the mood for some love play. Personally, I think it has to do with the fact that people use champagne for celebrations, and all those bubbles combined with a good mood is the perfect scenario for having sex. Good champagne is not cheap, and strawberries intensify the flavor of the champagne. This is why they are so often served together. Another expensive food that is considered to be good for the libido is caviar. Some studies have suggested that most seafood is an aphrodisiac, but maybe that is because it some places it can be a bit pricey, and many adults associate a nice dinner out with the fun bedroom activities that usually follow the nice dinner.

There are many foods in the second category of aphrodisiacs. These foods are considered to be aphrodisiacs because of what the food contains. Some of them might even surprise you. Oysters contain dopamine, which is a hormone that is naturally in our body and increases your level of arousal by putting you in a really good mood. Another food that contains good things is chocolate. Eating chocolate releases endorphins, which make you feel really good about everything, including yourself and the person who is with you. When it comes to chocolate, the best ones are those that are labeled dark chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate. These kinds of chocolate have more of the things that are good for you than milk chocolate.

There are also lots of fruits and vegetables that are thought to be aphrodisiacs. These include bananas and avocados and celery. Bananas and avocados give your extra energy to enjoy some of those libido-laced activities. The quirky thing about celery is that if a man eats it, he secretes a hormone that women are supposed to find really sexy. Figs are also thought to be libido enhancers, and it can be in either the fresh or dried form. Strawberries, as mentioned before, and cherries and peaches can be aphrodisiacs, too, depending on whether or not you like fruit.

A third category is the scent of certain foods. In some studies, it has been found that when men smell anything that has cinnamon in it, they get turned on. Some women find the scent of cinnamon very sexy, as well. But the top scent for women that is an aphrodisiac is the scent of almonds. Feed her almonds and she is yours, according to some research.

Interestingly enough, there are some alcoholic drinks besides champagne that are considered to be arousing. These are martinis, a glass of very fine wine of your choice, a cosmopolitan, and the favorite of college students, the tequila body shot.

Whether or not these things actually work or we just think they work is probably going to be up for discussion and debate forever. A lot of these foods are good for you anyway, especially the fruits and vegetables, so eating them as aphrodisiacs won't hurt you. Recent studies have shown that drinking in moderation can be good for you, and that dark chocolate has anti-oxidants and other health benefits. Things that have cinnamon in them smell heavenly, and taste just as good and almonds are good for you, too. For some people, oysters and caviar are an acquired taste, but there are those that love to eat these things. Chances are, if you don't like the food, it is probably not going to be a libido enhancer for you. However, if you like the food, try it out. There's nothing to lose, and you might enjoy finding out if foods are an aphrodisiac with your favorite partner.
