Top Secret Recipes
Friday, September 08, 2006

By: Melissa Martinez

Okay, so have you ever wondered how to make all the food you eat out every day? Well, here's your chance to find out.
The first secret recipe we will uncover is the In-N-Out Double-Double Burger.

This is a recipe for making what many believe to be the best hamburger in the world. One can recall the many occasions on which this very burger has been mentioned by celebrities on numerous award show nights. This and many other recipes can be found on the internet or in books that have been published on the subject. I've categorized a few of my favorites below.

Now, the secret to duplicating this and other fast-food burgers is getting the beef patties very thin...about 1/4 inch-thick. If you like, you can press the beef thin onto wax paper and freeze the patties ahead of time. This makes them easier to work with.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

Plain Hamburger Bun
1/3 pound ground beef
Dash salt
1 tablespoon Kraft Thousand Island Dressing
1 large tomato slice (or 2 small slices)
1 large lettuce leaf
4 slices American cheese (Singles)
-or- 2 slices real American cheese
1 whole onion slice (sliced thin)

1. Preheat a frying pan over medium heat.
2. Lightly toast the both halves of the hamburger bun,
face down in the pan. Set aside.
3. Separate the beef into two even portions, and form each
half into a thin patty.
4. Lightly salt each patty and cook for 2-3 minutes on the
first side.
5. Flip the patties over and immediately place two slices of
cheese on each one. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
6. Assemble the burger in the following stacking order from
the bottom up: bottom bun, dressing, tomato, lettuce, beef patty with cheese, onion slice, beef patty with cheese, top bun.

For a little something to go with those burgers, here is the recipe for the McDonald's Strawberry Milkshake.
2 cups vanilla ice cream
1 1/4 cups low fat milk
3 tablespoons strawberry flavor Nesquik mix

Yes, it really is that simple.

Now another highly regarded secret recipe is the secret sauce that McDonald's uses on its Big Mac.
It goes a little something like this:

1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons French dressing
4 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
1 tablespoon finely minced white onion
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt

1. Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl and stir well.
2. Place the sauce in a covered container and refrigerate it for several
hours, or overnight, so that the flavors blend. Stir the sauce a
couple of times as it chills.
Makes about 3/4 cups.

Another one of my favorites is the Wendy's Chili Recipe. It's a tasty alternative to soup and surprisingly simple to make.
It has been a staple at Wendy's restaurants for over thirty years.

Here are the ingredients:

2 pounds ground beef
One 29-ounce can tomato sauce
One 29-ounce can kidney beans (with liquid)
One 29-ounce can pinto beans (with liquid)
1 cup diced onion (1 medium onion)
1/2 cup diced green chili (2 chilies)
1/4 cup diced celery (1 stalk)
3 medium tomatoes, chopped
2 teaspoons cumin powder
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
2 teaspoons salt
2 cups water

1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat; drain off the fat.

2. Using a fork, crumble the cooked beef into pea-size pieces.

3. In a large pot, combine the beef plus all the remaining ingredients, and bring to a simmer over low heat. Cook, stirring every 15 minutes, for 2 to 3 hours.

Makes about 12 servings.

If you are a junk food junkie you will love these recipes. They are, of course, just the tip of the iceberg. You can find a whole array of these types of recipes on the internet. Simply do a search for "Top Secret Recipes" on your favorite search engine and voila! Tons of sites will pop up with every secret sauce and recipe imaginable.

In addition to the fast food restaurants listed above, you will find recipes from take out restaurants as well. So spice up your daily menu a bit and try some of these recipes today!
