What is all the hype about Organic??
By Casey Manes

The organic craze seems to be picking up momentum lately. For many, it is just a fad, a hip trend that will soon fade. Others have made it a lifestyle and have been committed to organic eating for years. What does “organic” really mean, and is it something you should consider for your own health?
In short, organic food is what our great grandparents consumed. Foods that were natural. Apple seeds were pure apple seeds, beef was unadulterated meat. No fake anything. No genetic material from wheat put into apple seeds, (referred to as genetically modified organisms), no synthetic hormones, medicines or meat given to vegetarian-eating livestock. The soil was filled with loads of decaying compost and beneficial nutrients and bacteria that ensured vitamins and minerals were passed from the soil to the food itself.
Since our ancestors’ time, scientists and our American government have developed methods of producing more food for less cost. This has involved practices that have more recently been in the news. These practices began the creation of “conventional” foods, including the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. So how does all of this affect you? The FDA is not certain of the long-term effects of many toxic, synthetic sprays and hormones, raising many health-related concerns. For this reason alone, the only sure way to avoid such chemicals is to purchase organically certified foods. One enormous downfall to this is that organic foods can be much more costly than conventional products. However, for the sake of a healthy body, careful, creative shopping can allow for comparative prices. If you are seeking out wellness options, organic food is a life-time investment towards wholeness and preventative care.
A few tips to save cash while going organic:
-Seek out local farmers markets; the prices are lower and sometimes even negotiable.
-Buy fish, sugary snacks, crackers, and cereal conventionally.
-Purchase fruit, vegetables, dairy, and meat organically.
-Utilize the bulk aisle frequently.
Organic food has a catchy name, but it is actually just real, tamper-free food, produced the way our bodies were meant to receive it. Investing in it is a big step towards your overall wholeness and wellbeing.
