It Is Never Too Early...
Friday, September 15, 2006

I know that it is the middle of September, but it is never too early to start thinking about ways to show your affection for your loved one on Valentine's Day.

What is the best way to impress your sweat heart this Valentine's Day? If I knew that, I would be doing much more than sitting in front of the television and sucking down a pint of ice cream on 14 February.

I digress; let us get back to the day at hand.

With the millennium now six years in the past, many have been eager to try new ways to show affection on this faux holiday. Some have gone as far as jumping out of airplane while in flight to convey that fact that they have fallen in love.

Putting these incredible feats of love's expressions aside, one cannot ignore the old romantic stand-by of a dinner and a movie for a Valentine's Day date. Even though I do not have the recipe for the best way to express one's feelings for another in my back pocket, here are some good ways to show him your love.

Suburbs? Yes of No.
Each one of us has a certain part of our souls that love the hustle and bustle of suburban life, even if we do not want to reside there. Sidewalk-less streets and stressed out soccer moms will tantalize anyone's sense of romanticism. NOT! However, some do like the convenience of going to one place and finding everything that they need. The closet thing to the suburbs that can be found in the city is Newport on the Levee. Here you can find a few attractions that you can frequent with your lover and not be too over whelmed. The AMC Theatres may be you best bet for a Valentine Day movie. Here you have a plethora of movie choices to get that special someone in the mood. The mood for what, you may ask... Mmm... I will leave that to the imagination.

Even though you may fiend for a taste of the suburban life, one can only take so much of the onslaught of mini-vans, and husbands camped outside, holding their wife's purses while she tries on shoes can be a bit daunting. Instead of continuing your romp in the citified suburban atmosphere, head over to Covington's Jack Quinn's Restaurant to cap off your romantic evening. Their fish and rice entree does a great job extinguishing the anxiety of your suburban experience.

Wednesday Night Blues
This year, "I-Luv-U" day falls on a Wednesday, so most of you may not have time to head out on an extravagant night in the town. Some of you may opt to enjoy a quiet evening at home (which is a great way to stay in line with your New Year's resolution of saving money). The combination of a dinner and a movie is well translated to staying in rather than heading out. For the dinner, I would suggest this tasty yet simple recipe:

Steamed Mussels with Noodles
1 dozen chilled mussels
2 large hand-full of wide egg noodles
1 portabella mushroom
½ green pepper
½ red onion

Boil noodles until al dente and set aside.
Chop onions, peppers and mushrooms in a saucepan on low to med heat for ten minutes.
Add mussels to this mixture for five minutes or until all of the mussels have opened.
Serve mixture over noodles.

I would recommend serving this with a simple salad on the side accompanied with a full-bodied Chardonnay.

As you slurp down your mussels, this would be a great time to muse with your partner. No subject should be taboo. Granted, this may cause strife if conversations turn to lying and infidelity so play your cards right and stick with the lighter stuff. It may be a good time to present a big surprise (i.e. a trip to Cancun, marriage proposal, etc), but I wouldn't advise that you pick this dinner as the right moment to drop the bomb that you want to break up, but to each his own.

The movie that will cap off this perfect night is Moulin Rouge with Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. The story of love and infatuation oozes through out this movie and should do wonders with bringing the two of you closer.

Indian Anyone?
For those who are into a more serene scene, you may want to dine at Apna Indian restaurant in the Gaslight District on Ludlow Avenue. A healthy choice of vegetable korma, and many different types of saag, to include, chicken, mushroom or tofu will fill your bellies. After dinner, the Esquire (which is just across the street) will serve as a good way to entertain you while letting the abundance of food settle in your tummies.

As I said the beginning, I am not an expert on love, but these are just a few ideas to make this year's Feb 14th a day that you will not forget.
