Harney & Sons Fine Teas
Wednesday, September 06, 2006

By Christina VanGinkel

After I received a gift of tea from a dear friend recently, I was so taken with both the tea itself and the tin it arrived in; I just had to find out more about the company that it came from. What I discovered was Harney & Sons Fine Teas online. They offer a selection of teas from around the world, including several that I have never seen before.

Right away, one of the things that stuck out about the site was how ingeniously many of their products are packaged. If you love to give tea as a gift, you know how important packaging can be. It has to be elegant, actually the more elegant, the better. That is just how tea is. Along with unique packaging ideas, the company offers up some very unique teas too!

As I browsed their site, I found many that could surely become favorites, with several as elegant as tea can be, one of which was their selection of Art Teas. They import them from the Fuji an Province, and they are made to be served in a glass teapot so the drinkers can enjoy the illustrative side of the tea right along with the flavor and aroma. I had never seen such a tea before, and was intrigued the more I read. Made with flowers, each is a stunning image that really needs to be seen. I am not quite sure how the process comes together from start to finish, but each looked like a large flower, with tea sewn inside, hiding in the petals just waiting for its release. When you drop the flower and tea into hot water, or pour the hot water over them, they open, bringing forth a stunning visual display, and releasing the aromatic flavor tucked inside. I had thought I knew all about tea, but the more I read about these, the more I realized I had a lot to learn about the world of tea and those who drink it!

As I browsed the site further, I also noticed that they had a complete selection of tea from Madonn's English Rose's Collection, in honor of the five characters, Binah, Grace, Charlotte, Nicole, and Amy, and each had a tea blend created to represent them. From the site, the description of each flavor is as follows:

Binah's Blend is a mixture of Chamomile flowers, rosebuds, and cornflowers, with orange flavor.
Grace's Blend is a decaffeinated black tea blended with peach flavor.
Charlotte's Blend is a caffeine-free Raspberry tisane that is fruity and dazzling.
Nicole's Blend is herbal Rooibos with cranberry and orange flavors.
Amy's Blend is a fruit tea, created with dried oranges, strawberries, apples, herbs, and Strawberry-Kiwi essence, which brews up into a bright red cup and is caffeine-free.

I have sampled the Amy's Blend, which not only tasted delicious, but smelled just as heavenly. As I read up further on these teas, it became apparent that they would be ideal for introducing the younger set to the world of tea and tea drinking, especially as each of them are caffeine-free. They can be purchased separately, or as a set stacked up in an ivory organza gift bag. Each selection itself comes packaged five to a tin, with the tins as interesting, or nearly so, as the tea itself.

The site also offers a Wedding Tea. The tea comes packaged a couple of different ways, one which is similar to the tiny tins that the English Rose collection is packaged in. You can even have the labels personalized to use for everything from party favors to table decorations. The tea itself is a Mutan White tea. It reads that it is infused with a hint of lemon-vanilla, along with rosebuds to signify the new union of the two loves. I just fell in love with the idea of a Wedding Tea and even though my wedding is nearly twenty-five years past, I thought these would make lovely gifts for our upcoming twenty-fifth wedding anniversary dinner for all of the guests.

If you are a tea lover, this is just a small sampling of what I found online at Harney & Sons Fine Teas, so be sure to check them out yourself for their selection of teas and accessories.

Thank you for the information, after having the quadruplets my time is limited. That site will help me a lot.
