Make Your Own Coffee or Tea Gift Basket
Monday, August 07, 2006

By Christina VanGinkel

If you have a coffee or tea lover on your gift list this year, build them a gift basket yourself that is sure to be remembered for a long time. By assembling the gift basket personally, you are achieving two things, one being that the recipient is going to be receiving a gift they will both use and love. Secondly, it will show that you cared enough to take the time to put it all together for them, and not just grab them a gift with little or no thought behind it.

Choose a Quality Basket

Start with a basket that is of a good enough quality that they will gladly use it long after the contents have been used up. This way, even though a large part of the gift will be used and consumed, they will still have something to remind them of how thoughtful a gift you gave them. Whether you choose a wicker basket, a combination wicker and wood basket, or some other construction, look for one that is sturdily built. If it is made of wicker, check the wicker to make sure that it is not cracked. Pick it up and make sure that it is not going to sag or break when you fill it. The last thing you want to give as a gift is a basket filled with coffee or tea products and paraphernalia that is going to break when the recipient goes to pick it up. Also, make sure to take consideration with the size of the basket. You do not want one so small that hardly anything can fit in it, yet you also do not want one larger than you can comfortably fill where the price is concerned. Coffee and tea products, especially quality ones, can add up quickly, so size of the basket can be a very important concern right from the start.

Fill

Use some type of fill in the bottom of the basket to create a comfortable nesting spot for everything you plan to include. Depending on the actual contents, this could be shredded newspaper or tissue paper. My favorite is shredded plain brown wrapping paper, similar to what thin paper bags are made of. If you have a paper shredder, make your own; otherwise buy a bag at a party planning store, craft store, or check with your local shipping store.

Coffee and Tea

Of course, one of the main ingredients is going to be the coffee or tea itself. Choose brands and flavors that you know they will enjoy, but feel free to toss in a few surprises too. Samples of most blends are available, or buy a few larger packages and break them up to create your own sampler pack. If you are making more than one basket, this can be a great way to fill the baskets with more of a variety than if you are just creating one. If you do need only one, use the extras yourself! Flavored coffees and teas are always fun to try, and as long as you take the time to consider the recipients typical tastes and likes, you are sure to choose a few that they will enjoy sampling.

Extras

Be sure to add a few extras such as a nice coffee mug or two, or for tea lovers, an elegant cup, and saucer. Additional items such as creamers, sweets, tea towels, tea infusers, honey, coasters, or even a tea pot or a coffee thermos, will make your basket that much more special. A gift certificate to a store that specializes in coffee or tea products is a nice way to top off the contents of such a basket. If you want to make the basket even more special, consider adding a few extras such as a coffee scented candle, or in some other delicious scent such as cherry or vanilla.

Finish

When you have your entire basket contents assembled, complete the basket with a cellophane wrap to keep it all contained. Tie it off with a nice bow or spirally ribbon, and give to the lucky recipient. Any coffee or tea lover is sure to be thrilled with both the gift itself and the thought behind such a personally thought out assemblage.
