Easter Candy
Monday, April 10, 2006

I have young children in my house-- children who still believe in the Easter bunny-- so, with Easter less than a week away, I am finding myself scrambling for candy to fill their little baskets. So what types of candies will I be looking for when I go on my candy shopping spree?

Jellybeans. I was never a jellybean person per se, until I tasted some little gems called "Jelly Belly's". Jelly Belly brand jellybeans are by far the best jellybean I have ever had. They come in dozens of gourmet flavors-- everything from toasted marshmallow to wild blackberry to strawberry cheese cake flavored. They even have a Dr. Pepper flavored jellybean! One of my favorite flavors is the buttered popcorn and my kids love the tutti-frutti. And if these flavors are too exotic for your kid's tastes, they also have traditional flavors like cherry, lemon and orange. Jelly Belly gourmet jellybeans are a delicious change from traditional jellybeans. Yes, the Easter Bunny will be bringing some to my house this year!

Chocolates. My husband, who is really just a big kid, is a chocolate fanatic. In recent years he has switched from a diet of Nestle Crunch bars and York Peppermint patties to gourmet dark chocolate. Why? Because dark chocolate is full of heart-healthy antioxidants, so I guess my husband feels less guilty about eating it (and believe me, he eats a lot of it). The bonus to this is that my children are now accustomed to eating the healthier dark chocolate. Of course my kids love milk chocolate, too, but I'm glad that I have the option of giving them either kind. I would rather have dark chocolate in the house and some of my favorite brands can be found at the local whole foods store. The "Endangered Species" brand of dark chocolate comes in a variety of flavors, including a mint chocolate bar that my kids love. So yes, the Easter Bunny will be hopping over to the gourmet chocolate section of the whole foods store this year.

Marshmallow chicks. Okay, so I admit that these are not my favorite Easter item in the world. Ultra sugary and dyed a bright yellow or pink, I'm not even sure what the marshmallow chicks are made of. But my daughter has seen them in the stores and she is constantly asking me to buy them for her. Of course the Peeps brand marshmallow chicks and bunnies are an Easter tradition. Even if your kids aren't crazy about the taste, they look cute in the basket. But because they are ultra sugary, most kids are crazy about eth taste and will devour them. At one store recently I even saw a Peeps brand egg, which is a chocolate egg that has a marshmallow chick inside of it. Now that's a cute idea! I also saw a recipe recently for another way to use Peeps-- to make s'mores. My daughter love s'mores, so it's not a bad idea to sandwich a marshmallow Peeps chick between some graham crackers and some melted chocolate.

Too busy for candy? My sister, a mother of three children who works full time at a very busy job, says she is too busy to go Eater candy shopping this year. In fact, she even asked me if I would buy extra candy when I go out to buy candy for my kids so she could use some for her kid's baskets as well (she offered to pay for half of the candy, of course). I wasn't sure how to respond to her request. Now I know it's hard to be a working mother, but there are other options besides piggybacking off other people's candy supply! The Hershey chocolate company's website touts their "Personalized Ultimate Eater Basket". It looks really cute-- it comes complete with a variety of Hershey chocolate products, as well as a plush bunny and Hershey bar personalized with your own message. Even a busy mom can order a personalized Easter basket online.

So, as I venture out on my journey to buy the best Easter candy for my kid's, I'll keep an eye out for traditional favorites as well as some new items. Oh, and I'll have to be sure to buy a few treats for the big kid in my house as well. Otherwise, I'll never hear the end of it.
