Trying New Foods
Saturday, February 25, 2006

By Christina VanGinkel

When I think of gourmet foods, it is usually because I need a gift for somebody that is hard to buy for. Gourmet foods, such as chocolates, teas, coffees, fruits, or even meats, are a great way to give the hard to buy for, something that you know they will use, and not toss in a drawer to be forgotten, or give away to somebody else.

As I try to expand my family's easting habits though, to include healthier items, and to just experiment with new dishes and tastes, and have been having a difficult time finding choices locally, I decided that I might have better luck shopping some of my favorite online venues that I often turn to when gift shopping. I found a few things and thought I would share with you, in case you are in the same dilemma I have been.

Sugar Cured Elk Tender, Texas Elk Company

Sugar Cured Elk Tender, from the Texas Elk Company. It is naturally raised with zero added hormones or additives. Having eaten Elk myself in the past, I never gave it a thought because though I liked it, I have never once seen the meat available locally. Why I never thought about ordering it, I do not know. It is suppose to be lower in fat and cholesterol than skinned chicken, so as far as meats go, Sugar Cured Elk Tender is healthy. It is low in monounsaturated fatty acids, and high in polyunsaturated fatty acids. The ingredients listed with these particular steaks are Elk, Water, Brown Sugar, Beef Puree, Salt, Powdered Sugar, Black Pepper, & Sodium Nitrate. These steaks are smoked and hand sliced before delivery. My mouth is watering just thinking about these. Aside from these steaks themselves, what I remember about the elk steak that I ate, was that in flavor comparison to other red meats, is that it was more of a pink color when raw, and sweeter than any beef I had eaten.

igourmet's 8 Cheese Sampler

Browsing around iFoodGifts.com, I remembered someone telling me about a cheese sampler from a company called igourmet, so I typed that into their search engine and found quite a selection of cheeses from the company. One in particular, an eight-cheese sampler, looked like the ideal pack for my family to try some different cheeses. The sampler pack of eight different cheeses includes Mountain Gorgonzola, Extra Aged Gouda, White Stilton with Lemon, Camembert, Malagon with Rosemary, Dorothea, St. Olof, and Coombe Farm Cheddar. Each cheese is a full eight ounces, so size proportion of each would also be sufficient, especially if they really enjoyed any of the cheese choices that are included. While I only recognized a name or two from the list of cheeses, that the whole idea of this is to get my family eating and trying some things, which I would not normally serve, this is perfect.

Alaskan King Crab Legs, Legal Sea Foods

I have ordered from Legal Sea Foods before, but never personally tried their Alaskan King Crab Legs, and have neither my son nor husband. They arrive pre-cooked, and pre-cracked. Our area is big on Friday night fish fry's and seafood dinners out at the restaurants, so I thought this might be a great way to have our own seafood dinner in, without the hassle of long lines and waits, and still be on track for trying a new dish. These look absolutely delicious, and I have a feeling that once I order these, we will be ordering them again!

Povitica Nut Filled Bread, Hickory Farms

Available in 2 1/2 lb loaves, each loaf has nearly a pound of English walnuts in it. My family is not big on different breads, so this one being something they could eat at breakfast, lunch, whenever, seems like a good one for them to try. We do not eat enough nuts of any kind, so this would also broach that subject. Traditional bread from Croatia, my young son could also get a bit of a lesson in geography after he tasted it. Hickory Farms ships these breads two loaves at a time, so either we could enjoy both loaves, or we could possibly share it with family, to help them expand their menu horizons!
