Anniversary Gift Basket
Tuesday, January 10, 2006

By Christina VanGinkel

In my mail today was an invitation for an anniversary party for good friends of ours. Sadly, they live quite a distance from us and actually making it to the party being given in their honor is not going to be an option. I know already that sending a gift in our place will not be the same thing, but that is what we will do. Making sure that what we send will show how good of friends they are to us, and that we are happy they have made it to such a grand achievement when it comes to number of years they are celebrating being together, is going to be difficult. Married for thirty-five years, parents, grandparents, homeowners, and a long list of other titles that we could attach to this couple, we know that they are happy with their lives and adding another candy dish or plaque to their belongings, just does not seem like an appropriate gift choice.

What I do know about them though, is that they love trying new things, both in life and with the foods, they eat, so if I could find a gift basket from a reputable company, that would be a great gift for two such people as they are.

After browsing a few gift basket companies that I have purchased from in the past, I have narrowed the search down to GiftBaskets.com. They have a gourmet section that has several baskets that are quite appealing. The first one that caught my eye was their Vintage Vignettes Basket. While no actual wine is included, in its place is a bottle of imported sparkling white grape juice, it includes Gorgonzola cheese straws, burgundy infused jam, merlot cheese spread with crackers, and other picks to round out the beautifully arranged wicker basket.

The next one that also intrigued me as a gift choice for our friends was the Gourmet at its Best Basket. It appears to be a sweet lover's delight, which both of our friends are. The basket has a selection that includes Ghiradelli bars, caramel peanut clusters, raspberry stick cremes, truffles, assorted chocolates, caramel popcorn, Jordan almonds, cheese straws, dipping pretzels with included honey mustard, and much, much more. It is actually available in four different prices, so one would surely be a good choice.

Then, I also noticed that they actually had a selection of gift baskets under the heading anniversary, so I thought I would look there before I decided on one of the two that I liked best so far. With four pages of suggestions, I was sure that I would be ready to place an order in no time. The first page actually showed the Vintage Vignette Basket, so that was a good sign towards the direction I was leaning. I also liked their Wine, Cheese, and Cheers Basket. Not actually a basket, the contents came in a keepsake gold chest with lid, and included a bottle of Ravenswood Sonoma Merlot wine, surrounded by choice merlot flavored cheese spread, focaccia crisps, Ghiradelli chocolate, and a box of Mrs. Beasley's chocolate chip cookies. They also have a spectacular silver plated ice bucket, complete with champagne and six world famous chocolate dipped strawberries. They offer either Roederer Champagne, or Dom Perignon. There are restrictions on having this shipped to certain states, so be sure to check their site for information on where you can and cannot have this shipped.

One more that caught my attention, the Grandest of Them All, is filled with Swiss & Belgian chocolates, Brie, and crackers, pretzels filled with peanut butter, nuts, Kathleen’s fabulous cookies, moth watering cherry cordials, gourmet popcorn, and a lavish assortment of coffees. Available in a variety of sizes, each looked like a splendid gift choice, no matter which size I would end up choosing.

Now I just have to narrow it down and get it ordered. We might not be able to attend this special celebration in person, but they will know how excited we are for them to have reached such a milestone in their marriage. The only bad part of the complete browsing session to choose a gift, is that they all looked so delicious, I want to order one for myself!
