Where to Dine in Cincinnati
Tuesday, December 13, 2005

Whether you are in the mood for steak, seafood, upscale, or cheap eats, you will be able to find an eatery to make you smile somewhere in Cincinnati.

If you want to take someone special out for an unforgettable meal, try The Precinct on Delta Avenue. As the name suggests, it really was a police precinct until 1981. Don't try to arrive before 5 p.m. because the restaurant will not be open. Gentlemen should wear a jacket and tie.

As the suggested attire may tell you, this is a rather expensive eatery, but the steaks are incredible. If you aren't in the mood for steaks or beef, you will be able to order veal chops or lamb chops as well as well as seafood entrees. The menu includes lobster, grouper, salmon, swordfish, oysters, halibut, shrimp, and crab.

One thing that you may want to do while in the city is to try out various restaurants for the infamous Cincinnati Chili. One such place is very affordable and found on Colerain Avenue. It is Camp Washington Chili. There are many unique things about this restaurant started in 1940. One of the most special may be that if you get a craving for Cincinnati Chili at 2 or 3 a.m., sure enough they will be there to serve you 24 hours a day from Monday through Saturday.

If you want to "eat like a local" here, you will need to know what a "three-way," "four-way," and "five-way" is. Order a three-way and you will get spaghetti with chili and cheese. Up the number to four and onions or beans will be added, and if you order a five-way, you will get the four-way with the ingredient you hadn't chosen before (in other words, the spaghetti, chili, cheese, red onions, and beans).

Camp Washington serves coney dogs, cheddar potatoes, burritos, and salads as well as chili. If you are "all chilied out" while visiting Cincinnati, have no fear, you can get double decker sandwiches here, too, and also in the middle of the night if you want to, of course. You will be choosing the ingredients for each "deck" and there are many combinations from beef and ham to bacon and tomato to egg salad and tomato and other choices. Regular sandwiches, fries, and salads are also on the Camp Washington menu. Being open 24 hours a day, there are also breakfast items from which to choose.

If you would like to opt for some New York style pizza, try The Flying Pizza on Fields Ertel Road. In addition to the various kinds and flavors of pizza, you will be able to find calzones here as well as sandwiches and salads (garden salad or grilled chicken). Sandwiches include hot Italian choices and a sausage, pepper, and onion sandwich.

If you do not want to eat meat, there is a vegetable pizza and if you want lots of meat, try the Sicilian with sausage, pepperoni, and sliced meatballs. Prices are reasonable and you will be able to do takeout here.

The Flying Pizza is in operation Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and the restaurant is closed on Sundays.
