Christmas Gift Idea for Your College Student
Sunday, December 11, 2005

We've been struggling for a while now with thoughts of what to get our daughter who is away at college for her first holiday season. The usual gifts just don't seem to be applicable anymore, and with space being quite limited in her dorm room, she won't want things that take up much room. It's been quite the quandry for a few months now, as we pondered what to do.

Then the answer came to us in a flash. She's a very social person, and she mentioned how much she missed treating her friends to an annual holiday get together at our house. What better treat than to provide her with the goodies to make her party happen at school? We've been working on a Christmas care package ever since.

Our package was based on a gift set of cheeses, crackers and sausages from the local mall. It even had a set of plastic cutlery included, so that she didn't need to ponder how to spread the cheeses. Now, we just had to add a bit to the package to personalize it and make it fun.

Knowing her love for warm drinks this time of the year, we popped in some packets of instant hot chocolate. That should warm her heart and some of her guests' hearts, too. A small box of tea bags rounded out the beverage portion of this tasty gift.

Next into the box were some individual envelopes of microwave popcorn, the kind with the fancy flavors. It didn't take up much space and will be a wonderful snack for her and for her friends. There's something about cheese and popcorn that simply can't be beaten as a combination of snack foods.

On the top of the box, we added some homemade Christmas cookies and a few pieces of her favorite kinds of candies. Everyone knows that sweet treats are great with the salty ones.

This particular care package isn't just for her. It's designed to allow her to share some of her holiday spirit with her new friends at school. Sure, we've sent care packages all this past fall to let her know that she's never far from our thoughts even though she's living a long ways away. We've sent personal sized servings of lots of goodies. But this particular care package is made for sharing. In this way, she can open her home, if you will, for the holidays. It will give her the wherewithall to entertain right before final exams.

Being able to provide holiday treats for friends and loved ones is a privilege that I hadn't thought much about until now. We take it for granted in our house-the doors are always open for impromtu parties, and the kids take us literally when we tell them that they can plan a party for their friends any time. I'm really glad that our oldest will now be able to carry on that tradition of hospitality and generousity during her college experience.

Now I just need to start planning a holiday basket to send back to school with her for belated New Year's parties!
