Restaurant Eating Challenges
Sunday, November 06, 2005

In recent years, I've been noticing more and more "eating challenges" offered by restaurants, eateries, and pubs across the country. These challenges usually consist of eating an unbelievably huge amount of food in a specified time period. Any regular customer can participate in these challenges, and the prizes range from getting your picture posted on the establishment's Wall of Fame to free t-shirts, cash, and of course, free food. Here are a few of the challenges that I've heard of so far.

Giant Hamburger
A pub in Pennsylvania made the national news a few months ago with its Belly Buster Burger Challenge. The Belly Buster burger is truly a monstrosity. It weighs a total of 15 pounds: the patty itself weighs 10.5 pounds, while the toppings "cheese, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise" and the bun account for 4.5 pounds of the total. Patrons who accept the challenge get a time limit of three hours in which to eat the burger. Up to two people can attack the Belly Buster, and if they succeed in eating all of it within the three-hour span, they will get the $34.95 burger for free. If they fail, they'll of course have to pay the full tab. A similar challenge is offered by the Clinton Station Diner (with their 12-pound Zeus burger) in New Jersey. Numerous other establishments across the country offer challenges with much smaller (3-5 pounds) burgers.

Ice Cream Sundae
An ice cream parlor in Aimes, IA offers the following challenge: eat a sundae consisting of 10 giant scoops of ice cream along with your choice of flavored syrups, nuts, whipped cream, a cherry, and more. You of course get to choose the ice cream flavors yourself. You can take as much time to eat the sundae as you want, and if you finish before the parlor closes for the day, you'll get the ice cream for free and you'll get your name engraved on the winners' plaque that hangs on the wall.

Enormous Pizza
There are many giant pizza challenges across the country, so finding one of these shouldn't be a problem. One of the most famous of these challenges is known as the "Pointersaurus Challenge" and is offered by Pointer's Pizza in St. Louis, MO. In this challenge, you and a friend have one hour in which to eat a 28-inch pizza with two toppings that weighs over 10 pounds. The prize for completing this challenge is pretty substantial. Winning teams get $500 for their efforts. However, unlike most other food challenges, the successful completion of the Pointersaurus doesn't excuse you from the $43 pizza tab. So you actually end up winning $467.

If you are looking for a way to make your next restaurant outing a bit more interesting, you should try to find local establishments that offer these types of eating challenges. Not only will you walk away with your fill of food, but you could end up winning some neat cash and prizes as a result of your efforts. Bon appetite!
