Regional Tailgating Specialties
Monday, November 21, 2005

Tailgating before football games is a time-honored tradition that has been around for decades.  If you've never tailgated before, then you have no idea what you're missing.  Well, I'm here to tell you a little bit about the regional food specialties that you can expect to indulge in if you are lucky enough to tailgate at one of the following locales at some point.  This list is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather is just intended to present a simple overview of some of the different foods that are out there.  I think it's safe to say that most tailgating parties will feature burgers, hot dogs, and brats, so I won't even mention those.

Philadelphia
Philadelphia Eagles fans are most likely to have some Philly cheese steak sandwiches available at their tailgating events.  Although other cities also have cheese steaks, Philadelphia is home to the original, so they know how to do it right:  sliced rib-eye steak, provolone cheese, and onions cooked to perfection and served on an Italian sub roll.

Buffalo
If you're in town to see the Buffalo Bills play, chances are you'll be able to grab some buffalo wings at nearly any tailgating party in the parking lot.  Of course Buffalo is where the whole craze started, so bring your bleu cheese dressing and get ready to enjoy some hot wings before the game.

New England
Are you interested in seeing the two-time defending Super Bowl champions play in person?  Well, then head on out to Foxboro, Massachusetts to see get a glimpse of Tom Brady, Corey Dillon, and the rest of the New England Patriots.  While you're there, stop by the parking lot and check out some of the tailgating fare.  You're likely to see quite a few fans indulging in scrumptious lobster tails or crab legs before the game, so if you're a seafood lover, this is the place for you!

Chicago
Head to the Soldier Field parking lot on a Sunday before the Bears play and you'll find a wide variety of foods waiting for you, including barbecue ribs.  So bring your wet wipes and a plastic bib, because you're not going to escape from this tailgating party without spilling a little sauce!

New Orleans
Louisiana is the Cajun-style cooking capital of the world, and their football games are no exception.  If you find yourself down on the bayou to check out the Saints or the LSU Tigers, then you'll have to make sure to stop by a tailgating event too.  New Orleans knows how to party (think Mardi Gras), and tailgating is no exception.  You can find everything from grilled catfish to variety of hearty gumbos that will leave you filled up and satisfied.

San Francisco
I've heard that along with the more traditional burgers-n-brats fare, quite a few 49ers fans set out a nice spread of wine and cheese at their tailgating parties.  That's probably not something I would be in the mood for before a football game; but hey, whatever works for you, right?
