My Favorite Chicago-Area Pizzerias
Sunday, November 13, 2005

One of the best things about living in the Chicago area is that there are so many places to get great pizza.  There are plenty of pizzerias in all the suburbs as well as in the heart of the city, and these places serve up a wide variety of pizzas.  From thin crust to deep dish or stuffed, it seems that you're never more than a 20-minute drive away from whatever style of pizza you desire.  Here are some great pizzerias to check out the next time you feel like sharing a pie with your family or friends.

Lou Malnati's
You haven't had true Chicago-style deep dish pizza until you've had a pie from Lou Malnati's!  This is one of the most famous pizzerias in the area.  If you ask people why Lou's pizzas taste so good, the most common answer you'll get is that it's all in the crust.  Lou's has a very delicious buttery crust that you just have to taste to believe.  I always get the sausage pizza from there, and I've never been disappointed.  Although there are currently 24 Lou Malnati's pizzerias in this area, I always go to the one downtown on Wells just for the experience of being in the city and all of that.

Giordano's
Giordano's is another fixture on the Chicago pizza scene.  They've been around for over thirty years and make the best stuffed pizza I've ever had.  One thing I love about eating at Giordano's is that they have so many great topping choices and combinations that allow you to make each dining experience different from the last.  My personal favorite is the Super Veggie, which comes with mushrooms, tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, and onions.  It's perfect!

Connie's Pizza
It seems harder and harder to find Connie's Pizza dining locations these days, but fortunately, there are still a couple close to me.  I grew up eating Connie's, as it was my family's pizza of choice.  They serve fabulous thick crust pizzas and also have great desserts.  Connie's is so good that it's the official pizza at many sporting events in town.  So if you go to Wrigley Field to catch a Cubs game, you'll be able to snack on Connie's pizza at the ballpark.  You can also get Connie's at U.S. Cellular and at the United Center.

Home Run Inn Pizza
I was first turned on to Home Run Inn Pizza when I went to a friend's house for lunch back in grade school.  That first pizza was a frozen one, but I soon discovered that there were actual Home Run Inn restaurants that I could go to for the real thing.  The thing I like most about eating at Home Run Inn is that they have "fun" pizzas.  For example, instead of the Super Veggie pizza I mentioned above, I go to Home Run Inn for their cheeseburger or barbecue pizzas.

So the next time you are in Chicago and want to indulge in some pizza, try one of these restaurants.  Regardless of what kind of pie you like, you won't be disappointed by Chicago's best!
