In Praise of Pringles
Monday, November 14, 2005

There are so many delicious snack foods on the market today that it can be difficult to keep up with all the new entries.  Some chips come and go, while others enjoy a very long shelf life (pardon the pun).  Out of all the different varieties of chips and snacks that I've eaten in my life, one of my favorites has got to be Pringles.  There are several reasons that I love Pringles.  Let's take a look at some of those reasons right now.

So Many Flavors
One of the best things about Pringles is that they come in so many different flavors.  Currently, I think there are 13 flavors available across the country, which is far more than any other snack chip that I can think of.  I mean, even pretty big potato chip companies such as Ruffles and Lay's don't produce their chips in that many flavors.  My favorite Pringles flavors are Barbecue, Cheezums, Sour Cream 'n' Onion, and of course the original flavor.

But the varieties that you see on your grocer's shelves aren't the only flavors Pringles makes.  For example, once when I was traveling through Canada, I tried Ketchup flavored Pringles.  Apparently, ketchup is a common chip flavor up north.  Those actually tasted pretty good, and if they were sold here in the U.S., I would definitely buy them.

Portability
In recent years, Pringles has come out with a couple of new can styles to make them easier to eat anywhere you happen to be.  For example, they have "Snack Stacks" that are small enough to fit in your brownbag lunch or that are the perfect serving size for a snack at anytime during the day.  I really enjoy these smaller cans because if I have a regular can of Pringles, I'm likely to eat half of it or more all in one sitting!  In addition to the Snack Stacks, there are larger "Grab and Go" cans that is just half as big as the regular ones.  These are good for those in-between occasions when you need something bigger than a Snack Stack but smaller than a regular can.  Both the Snack Stacks and the Grab and Go cans are easy to handle, and of course the replaceable lid is very convenient.  No more spilling a half-empty bag of chips all over my backpack or my car!

Fun Image
I know that as a "responsible adult", I'm not supposed to let television advertisements have an effect on my own personal judgment of a product.  But, I really think that Pringles does a great job with their advertisements.  For me, Pringles have consistently been presented as a fun, trendy chip, while other snack foods come off as either too "adult" (baked, low-fat, and fat-free products come to mind) or too childish (think of the products that have cartoon-character mascots).  Pringles have always appealed to me because it didn't fall into either of those extremes.

If it's been a while since you've had Pringles, I recommend that you check them out the next time you go shopping.  You might be surprised at what's available now!
