Hungry in Philadelphia?
Monday, November 07, 2005

If you are spending some time in the "City of Brotherly Love" and need a great meal, there will be many choices. This review will cover from one end of the spectrum to the other so there will certainly be fabulous food in Philadelphia for every wallet.

If you want to try a brand new upscale Greek restaurant, stop by Estia on Locust Street. If you have visited the city before and it doesn't sound familiar, that is because Estia just opened for business in the fall of 2005. The food and ambiance are purely Mediterranean. If you can't stand the thought of being served a whole fish, this probably isn't the place to dine because that is exactly how the fish is served. On the other hand, if this is precisely what you were searching for to celebrate an event or take a date for dinner, it will be perfect.

Being upscale as it is, Estia is rather expensive, as would be expected. There is, however, a good reason for that because the fish are brought in from the Greek Isles and places like Portugal and Morocco. Expect to pay on an average of $25 to $35 for your entree. Don't forget your Greek dessert and Greek coffee for the ending to a very memorable meal.

If upscale isn't your "cuppa," try the family-friendly restaurant called Johnny Rockets on South Street. This restaurant serves the kinds of foods that you would expect from a 50s diner. Start with onion rings or fries (either plain, cheese fries, or chili fries).

Add one of Johnny Rocket's burgers or sandwiches and you have one of those meals that is pure Americana especially if you end with a shake, malt, or float; all three are available here. There are numerous sandwiches from which to choose but they also offer things like chicken tenders and salads. If you have space for dessert, maybe the Hot Fudge Sundae or Apple Pie will fill the bill (and your tummy!)

I would be totally negligent to talk about eating in Philadelphia without a word about the food for which the city is renowned. Yes, you will find Philadelphia Cheesesteak joints all over the city and outskirts. There are big places, little places, diners, drive-ins . . . all kinds of places to delight in Philly's favorite food. Get it with sauce or without, with onions or without, or however you want it, but try more than one while you are in the area. I am not going to be a fool and point any of them out because it wouldn't be fair (and it's very difficult to find a bad cheesesteak!)

Melrose Diner on Snyder Avenue has been in operation for 70 years. Everything on the menu is available to take out, so stop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner or grab your meal to take back to a hotel room if you are in the city for vacation or business.

There are many good old fashioned foods on the menu from salads to seafood and meats, platters, and items from the grill. You can order pie and cake for dessert, either by the slice or buy the whole thing. Popular flavors are apple pie and coconut custard, cheesecake, carrot cake, buttercream cake, and of course chocolate cake! Prices at Melrose Diner are very reasonable.
