Eatin' Big in Houston
Sunday, November 13, 2005

Any visitor to Houston who leaves the city hungry certainly does so by choice and not because there isn't a nearly overwhelming choice of eateries. No matter what kind of food you are looking for, and at what price range, you will find it nearly anywhere you look in Houston.

Taste of Texas Restaurant found on Katy Freeway is the place for an unforgettable dinner with only the freshest of ingredients. It is upscale and expensive, but well worth the cost for those choosing to dine here. You can start by choosing from their nearly 300 choices of wines and champagnes or start right in with your dinner choices.

The menu items are all fabulous and it is difficult to choose favorites. You may want to begin with something quite unique, so the Baked Brie, Onion Strings with hickory sauce, or Texas Quail Bites would fill that bill. The quail is wrapped with bacon and jalapeno and served with ranch dressing.

The restaurant specializes in Certified Angus Beef and one thing that makes it unique is that you can visit their on site butcher shop and choose the beef cuts that you want for your dinner. There are many beef choices on the menu (Ribeye, Center Cut Filet, Sirloin, T-Bone, Prime Rib, Porterhouse, etc.) for your entree along with Lobster Tail if you prefer seafood.

Not only is the beef fresh at Taste of Texas, they also bake their own breads, make their spreads and apple butter, bake their desserts, and grind their own coffee beans.

If there isn't room in your wallet for such a grand dinner, you may want to try the more affordable and fun Joe's Crab Shack on Richmond Avenue. You can choose as the name suggests, many kinds of crab choices, but the menu offers other entrees as well.

If you are not in the mood for crab of any kind, choose from other kinds of seafood, steaks, burgers, pasta or chicken. Don't forget to save some room for cheesecake, chocolate cake, bananas foster, or key lime pie.

One thing you will be seeing a lot of in Houston and all over Texas, in fact, are barbecue restaurants. There will always be an abundance of them, so sample a few (or a lot!) of them and see which turns out to be your favorite barbecue restaurant.

Hickory Hollow is one of many Houston barbecue joints. Found on Heights Boulevard and also on Fallbrook Drive, you will be served live music with your food here for a bonus. Prices are reasonable and the menu offers platters (steaks, sausage, ribs, chicken fried steak) and other items. You will be able to choose things like chicken, po'boys, and fish if you don't want the barbecue (such as catfish filet or chicken burrito to name two).

If you are eating light, Hickory Hollow hosts a fresh salad bar and lighter alternatives to a burger or BBQ sandwich such as a grilled chicken sandwich.

Dessert Gallery Bakery and Cafe is a great place to pick up dessert after your meal or even as a substitute for a meal if you want to be naughty and have only dessert. There are dozens of choices from pies, cakes, cookies, and other desserts, so if you have a sweet tooth, this is definitely the place to spend some of your time in Houston.
