Set Up a Waffle Station
Wednesday, October 12, 2005

During the week, few of us have time to sit down and enjoy breakfast. Usually, we are just rushing around trying to get the kids to the bus stop on time or trying to get ourselves out the door to work before we get caught up in traffic. So when the weekend comes, it's nice to take some time out for a great breakfast treat every once in a while. If you have kids, or if you just like waffles, then setting up a waffle station for Saturday or Sunday brunch is a wonderful way to unwind and have the type of breakfast that you can't have from Monday to Friday.

If you have enough counter space in your kitchen, you can just set up the supplies in there, and let everyone in your family (or whoever else will be participating in your brunch) build their own waffle creations by moving from topping to topping, in the same manner as an assembly line. If you don't have enough counter space, you can set the toppings out on a small table near the dining table.

First, you of course need to start with some waffles. It would be fantastic if you could make the waffles from scratch or from some instant powder mix. However, that's certainly not a requirement. The emphasis with waffle stations is usually on the toppings rather than the actual waffles (at least that's how it is for me), so as long as you have some type of waffles, you'll be good to go.

Next, it's time to decide on the toppings. You can keep your selections healthy by putting out fresh blueberries and strawberries, low-calorie syrup, low-fat butter, etc. But if you really want to have fun, you can go all out with the toppings that you don't allow yourself to eat every single week. For example, flavored syrups are wonderful for waffle bars. In addition to traditional maple syrup, why not put out a bottle of apricot, blackberry, raspberry, or boysenberry syrup as well? These varieties are all very tasty on waffles and chances are you don't use them all that often, so they make for a nice change of pace.

Syrup and fruit, though absolutely essential, aren't enough for your weekend waffle station. Be sure to make things like whipped cream, chocolate chips, and even candy sprinkles available. The more toppings you have for your waffle bar, the better. Try to set out at least one topping that each person in your family loves.

You obviously don't have to have a waffle station brunch every week, but you should try it at least once. If your family enjoys it, you can think about making it a bimonthly or monthly tradition. Waffle stations are almost always a hit with young kids, so why not have one the next time your child hosts a sleepover? You'll become the most popular parent in the neighborhood because waffles with toppings sure makes for a more interesting breakfast than cold cereal and a slice of toast. So what are you waiting for? Set up your own waffle station this weekend!
