Pancakes, Anyone?
Tuesday, October 18, 2005

When it comes to breakfast fare, we are presented with a dizzying array of choices. Take a stroll down the cereal aisle at your local grocery store, and you could spend quite a bit of time trying to absorb the names of all the different products available. Of course there are the old standard cereals that have been around for decades; and in addition, there are many new products that have been introduced relatively recently. From health food to junk food, you can have nearly any kind of breakfast you want these days.

Personally, I like to keep my breakfast fare simple. I usually just grab a cereal bar or something similar as I am heading out the door to go to work. Or, if I'm really pressed for time, I sometimes hit the take out window at one of the national fast food establishments that operate all over my city. If it's a really hectic morning, I'm likely to just head in to work and hope that someone brings in bagels or doughnuts to share.

On weekends, when things settle down a bit, my favorite breakfast to whip up for myself or for my family is pancakes. Pancakes are so simple and easy to prepare that anyone can make them, even people who have very little experience in the kitchen. Plus, they almost always turn out perfect and delicious. I've never personally messed up a batch of pancakes, and I don't know anyone else who has either. Pancakes are just one of those foods that always seems to work out great.

One of the best things about pancakes is their versatility. You have a lot of control over the final product, which is always a good thing when it comes to cooking. This means you can eat pancakes frequently, and yet still have enough variety so that you don't feel like you're eating the same thing all the time. For example, you can add fresh or frozen blueberries or strawberries to the batter prior to cooking in order to inject your pancakes with awesome fruit flavor. If you're on a health kick, you can even add something like a handful of wheat germ or rolled oats to the batter to make your pancakes much healthier.

Another fun thing to do with pancakes is to make them in special shapes. If you have stainless steel cookie cutters (as opposed to plastic ones), then you can put those in the frying pan and pour the batter directly into them. You'll get small pancakes in lots of fun shapes. You can also create things other fun shapes, too. For example, my toddler's personal favorite is a Mickey Mouse head. Use your imagination here!

Finally, you can make your pancakes taste even better by using flavored syrups. You know how the International House of Pancakes and other breakfast restaurants have 4 or 5 syrup varieties for you to choose from? Well, why not have the same selection at home! It definitely makes eating pancakes more fun.

Don't get overwhelmed by all the breakfast food choices out there. Stick with pancakes and you can't go wrong!
