Orlando: Much More than Dinner Theaters!
Monday, October 03, 2005

I have just completed a blog concerning the dinner theaters that are found all over the Orlando and Kissimmee area of Florida. They are very popular and many visitors to the area try to take in at least one of the shows. But Orlando isn't the type of place for a one or two day vacation, so what about the other days of your visit? What about when you have had your fill of theme park food? There are countless fabulous restaurants in Orlando for just a "regular" meal when you are dinner theater and theme-parked to your limit.

The best way to describe the Cafe Tu Tu Tango on International Drive is "artsy." Diners find themselves among musicians and artists performing their crafts. Food choices are plentiful and if you like tapas (little meals) this is the place to try. The menu starts with many dips and spreads that you can eat with chips, bread, or crackers.

Continuing on to your sopa (soup) you will be able to choose from soups such as Black Bean Soup and Chicken, Chorizo, and Garbanzo Bean Soup. If your choice is a salad, there are some very interesting salad offerings on the menu.

You will also find meats (some with interesting menu names) on skewers and more elaborate offerings such as baby lamb chops that have been grilled and marinated with sweet apples. If you are feeling brave, try something such as alligator bites. Seafood is on the menu, too . . . items like Coconut Curry Mussels and Baby Chipotle Lobster Tail.

An artsy establishment probably wouldn't seem the same without pizza being served, so that's found here, too. If you are in the mood for a quesadilla, egg roll, or empanada, yes, they are all served at Tu Tu Tango.

For a different kind of cuisine not found in every city, try Pho' Hoa on North Primrose Drive in Orlando for a genuine Vietnamese meal. You can start with a noodle soup and move onto the entree that includes rice, of course. Try Com Ga Nuong Cha Gio which is chicken and fried roll that is served with a vegetable and steamed rice. An alternative is Lemon Grass Pork Chop also served with vegetables and steamed rice.

Vermicelli Bowls and a few specialty dishes such as carrot beef stew and hot & sour seafood are available. Don't forget to check out the unusual drinks that are presented.

If your cuisine of choice for any particular evening is good ol' American burger and fries, stop by Back Yard Burgers just nine miles away in Altamonte Springs. They offer specialty burgers (fresh!) from the mild bacon cheddar burger to the spicy and hot Miz Grazi (tm) burger.

If you prefer a hot dog or chili dog, they are on the menu as well as salads and specialty baked potatoes. Diners can add fries and a shake to their burger and turn it into an extremely "feel good" comfort food meal.

If you would rather remain within the city limits for your comfort food, plan one of your meals at Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill on East Colonial Drive. Choose from barbeque platters, steak, fish and chicken dishes (honey glazed salmon, grilled chicken, Angus burgers, etc), or other sandwiches and burgers.

Appetizers, salads, sides, and desserts (from hot sugar cinnamon doughnuts to chocolate peanut butter pie to apple cobbler with ice cream!) are also included on the Smokey Bones menu.
