On the Go With Breakfast Bars
Wednesday, October 05, 2005

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? We've been hearing that for years, from both nutrition experts and moms alike. Even so, it can still be quite a struggle to fit breakfast in to our hectic morning routine. It seems that something always comes up and we have to rush around like maniacs to make it out the door in time for the train, the school bus, or in order to beat traffic. But having breakfast doesn't mean you have to sit down and make time for pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast, and orange juice. These days, there are many breakfast bars that are meant to help you get something in your stomach before you start your day in earnest. And some of these convenience products are even relatively healthy!

It seems like just a few years ago that we didn't have many choices when it came to breakfast bars. In fact, it wasn't too long ago that the term "breakfast bar" didn't even really exist. We had granola bars and Pop Tarts as convenient breakfast items, but not much else. When you walk through the cereal aisle today, however, you might be overwhelmed at all the choices you see. For example, if you are on a special diet, such as Atkins or South Beach, you can get breakfast bars that fit within the requirements of those plans. Another tasty choice is the cereal and milk breakfast bar line marketed by Kellogg's. You can get a couple of different varieties, such as Coco Krispies, Frosted Flakes, or Froot Loops. These bars taste similar to the real cereal-and-milk versions of the products, but of course are more convenient. Plus, there are just about 100 calories in each bar!

Some of the healthier choices out there include Kellogg's All-Bran bars (in Honey Oat or Brown Sugar Cinnamon) and Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars in a variety of fruit flavors. The bars in both of these product lines have fewer than 150 calories each, and account for only 5% of your recommended daily fat intake. That's pretty good, considering one bar serves as an entire meal.

You can also find oatmeal-based bars from companies like Quaker Oats. I personally prefer these bars because they tend to fill me up more than other bars do. The Oatmeal Breakfast Squares from this company currently come in 5 different flavors: Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Baked Apple, Banana Bread, Raspberry Streusel, and Oatmeal Raisin. This is a great variety, and allows me to eat a different flavor for each day of the work week if I want to. They taste pretty good, but at more than 200 calories per bar, are probably not the best choice out there if you are counting calories.

So if you are having trouble trying to fit some kind of breakfast in each morning, check out some of these breakfast bars the next time you go shopping. You'll love the convenience, and you just might be surprised at how good they taste!
