Emeril Lagasse Inspires ME to Cook
Thursday, October 13, 2005

By Christina VanGinkel

My daughter called yesterday, and during our phone conversations, she mentioned that one of my grandson's favorite things to watch on television is a cooking show that is on the Food Network. Emeril Lagasse apparently has the attitude to draw my grandson away from nearly any task. That my grandson is all of twenty-seven months old makes that quite the feat. I decided I had to check out this man, as anybody that could draw my grandson's attention away from his toy Weebles or his Legos was definitely worth at the least a perusal.

I went to the Emeril Lagasse Website first and found enough information on both him and his cooking to inspire me to skip serving macaroni and cheese for the second night in the past four evenings. Then I noticed his Recipe Finder on the top right hand side of the Website and I knew he had recruited a brand new fan. By typing in an ingredient, I was rewarded with more recipes than I could ever use in a lifetime that included that particular ingredient I had just searched for. Recipes that I would actually want to cook and eat. What if you are not sure what ingredients you want to use, well that is not a problem either, as he also has recipes already divided by the most popular categories, including Appetizers, Baked Goods, Beverage/Alcoholic, Beverage/Non-Alcoholic, Breakfast, Dessert, Entree, Kids, Miscellaneous, Pastas, Salads, Sandwiches, Sauces, Sides, and Soups.

When I typed in Apples, I was given complete recipes for everything from EMERIL'S KICKED UP HALLOWEEN CARAMEL APPLES, to WHISKEY BRAISED APPLESAUCE. Clearly, there are recipes to please everyone from child to adult! I proceeded to spend several hours, seriously, perusing the many recipes on the site. Too often, cooking sites that are tied to television programs or famous chefs are hard to navigate, and just want to sell you a cookbook. They might provide you with a teaser recipe or two, but not a complete recipe finder as Emeril Lagasse Website's does.

Not a great cook by any stretch of the imagination, that a site like this would so inspire me is compliment in itself. That it was pointed out to me courtesy of my daughter and young grandson is just more encouragement that the recipes I find on the site will be things my family will at least be willing to try.

This ultimately goes to show you that you never know when something may inspire you to try something new, or to at the least retry something you have found to be difficult in the past. I have cookbooks, but none of them has recipes that sound much like dishes my family would enjoy, let alone try. Emeril's recipes seem to have an ease to them. That he even has a group within the Recipe Finder called Kids was a good sign right from the start. With recipes I found there, including BIG BOY PIZZAS, PIZZAZY PIZZA SANDWICHES, and KICKED UP SCRAMBLED EGGS, I think cooking and I might still have a chance at success!
