Applebee's in Marquette Michigan
Sunday, October 09, 2005

By Christina VanGinkel

We drove nearly one hundred miles north yesterday to watch my thirteen-year-old son play football at the Superior Dome in Marquette Michigan. This would be the third year that he played a game at this beautiful dome, actually the world's largest wooden dome, and each time we find more things to like about the town of Marquette itself, with the restaurants alone enough to make the drive worthwhile. We had made plans before we even set off for the day to follow up the game with dinner at the local Applebee's restaurant. Joining us would be my husband's brother, along with his wife, and my husband's parents. This is the same group whose company we enjoyed last year too. Along with my son that made for a table of seven. Though Applebee's is a chain restaurant, and alcohol is served, the one in Marquette has a very fun, homey atmosphere, a place you would not mind in the least bringing any family member, even kids. The parking lot is always filled to capacity, and after enjoying several meals there now through the years, we know why.

We arrived at the restaurant at about six thirty in the evening. We were greeted by a line extending out the door. With the temperatures dropping to near freezing this fall evening, that we would stand outside for any length of time to get a table, said a lot about the food. We ended up not having to stand outside long though, and were soon waiting in their sitting area where we could browse menus and ask questions of a very friendly waiter about the specials and waiting time. We were told that a wait of a half hour was expected, but were actually sitting at a table and ordering within twenty minutes. The restaurant was filled to capacity, yet we soon had our appetizers and drinks, with not one waiter, but two taking both meal and drink requests.

Not long after the appetizers were served, but long enough for us to enjoy them, our meals were served. Delicious was the key word. Steaks were cooked as ordered, their buttermilk shrimp was easily the best I had ever had, and even my son's cheeseburger was cooked to perfection. The waiters were attentive in the bustling atmosphere, and were quick to bring anything and everything we requested. It would have been easy for us to think we were the only table they had to wait on, even though there was not an empty table in sight. Why, this restaurant even has the wait staff sing Happy Birthday when it is called for! Truly, if you are looking for a good family restaurant, one where you can enjoy the restaurant itself as much as the food being served, this is it. While I have eaten at other Applebee's through the years, and enjoyed each one, not even the others compared to this one.

Not only would I recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling in the Marquette area, you can be sure that if my son plays there again next year as scheduled, we will be visiting ourselves once again.
