Variety With Your Bread Machine
Wednesday, September 07, 2005

If you are a relatively new owner of a bread machine, like I am, then you probably aren't yet aware of how powerful a tool you have at your disposal. There are so many different things you can make with your machine, such as pizza dough, doughnuts, and of course lots of bread varieties. I love bread, but I didn't get a bread machine until just a few months ago because I figured that I would either never have time to make my own bread or that I would be too lazy to do so on a consistent basis.

But I am happy to report that I use my bread machine 3-4 times per month, and I am really enjoying it so far. Now that I am becoming more familiar with its settings and capabilities, I am starting to experiment with the breads that I make. It's very easy to get different bread varieties from your bread machine simply by adding the desired ingredients during the kneading stage. Here are some great-tasting additions that you can try the next time you make bread. Unfortunately, since loaf sizes and wet-to-dry ingredient ratios differ for each machine, you're going to have to experiment a bit to get measurements that work well with your setup. Therefore, I am not including how much of each of the following ingredients I added to my machine. These are just ideas for you to try, rather than actual recipes.

Getting garlic bread from your bread machine is very easy to do. You can either use fresh, crushed garlic cloves, or a couple of teaspoons of garlic powder. Personally, I use the powder because it's much more convenient. I also add about 50% more butter than the regular plain bread recipe calls for, and add some dried parsley. That's it! The result is a very light garlic flavor, so if you want something more intense, you will have to add more powder or cloves.

Honey is an ingredient that works well in many breads, so make sure you have plenty on hand as you experiment with your bread machine. As little as three tablespoons of honey can really sweeten your bread and give it a fabulous flavor. In addition to the honey, try putting a small amount of buttermilk into the dough mixture. You can also use honey with butter and wheat flour for a wonderful honey wheat bread loaf. The possibilities with honey are practically endless, so just experiment a bit.

Finally, your bread machine is the perfect tool for making fresh sweets right in your own home. I have been making my own cinnamon rolls for a few weeks now, and they have always turned out very well. You need to add an egg, some extra butter, and of course a couple of teaspoons of cinnamon. You'll also have to handle the frosting separately, and finish baking the rolls in your oven. But the results are so fantastic that you won't mind these extra steps.

The bottom line here is to go ahead and have some fun with your bread machine. It's not just for plain, boring white bread anymore!
