Treat Yourself to an Expensive Meal
Saturday, September 10, 2005

For most people these days, going out to a restaurant for dinner is no longer a treat, but rather a necessity that stems from simply not having enough time or energy to get a meal on the table after a long, tiring day at work. Because of this, you probably take price into consideration more often than not when weighing your restaurant options. This is usually how my husband and I arrive at a restaurant choice. We decide beforehand that we don't want to spend more than $15-$20 per person, and then we proceed from there. Sometimes, however, it's fun to treat yourself to an expensive restaurant meal, either for a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary, or for no reason at all.

This is easier said than done. My husband and I generally try to have an exquisite restaurant meal at least once a year. At first, I found it very difficult to deliberately spend lots of money on dinner in a restaurant. It's not that I'm a cheapskate; that's far from the truth. It's just that I had trouble committing to an expensive dish once I was actually in the restaurant with the menu in hand. There was always a nagging little voice in the back of my mind telling me to go for the cheapest options, or to just get the soup and salad. Plus, if you've ever been to really nice restaurants, then you know that their portions are absurdly small. That might make it even harder for you to order an expensive meal.

After a few attempts, I finally got over my hang-ups, and now I have come to truly enjoy these special dinners. I know it sounds like a cliche, but you really can tell the difference between the high-quality food at an upscale restaurant, and the okay food at your neighborhood tavern-style hangout. I have not become a food snob or anything like that, but I definitely look forward to our once-in-a-while fine dining experiences.

In case you are wondering, the most expensive meal I've ever eaten was at the Signature Room on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building in downtown Chicago. Between the crab salad appetizer, the soup of the day, the grilled fillet of beef main course, a couple glasses of wine, and a chocolate mousse for dessert, the tab was over $100 per person. I realize that's not a whole lot as far as expensive restaurants go, but that's plenty high enough for me. Of course there's no minimum (or maximum) that you have to spend on your special night out. As long as you enjoy the food, and it's a step above the fare that you usually feast on, then it will work perfectly as your special treat.

So if you or your significant other has a birthday or other milestone coming up, why not go out to a truly fancy restaurant to celebrate? You'll have fun dressing up, eating great food, and enjoying each other's company for a couple of hours. You might be surprised at what you've been missing!
