Samplings of International Cuisine in Chicago
Tuesday, September 27, 2005

With the innumerable excellent restaurants in the city, being hungry in Chicago can only happen if you choose for that to happen. Visitors to the Windy City will be able to find nearly any cuisine that hits their fancy and from the inexpensive cafes to the elaborate upscale eateries, it is all found in Chicago. I will name three cuisines and places at which to find fantastic food, but the city is filled with restaurants such as these with countless worldwide cuisines available.

The Mystic Celt found on Southport Avenue is one choice for some Irish hospitality and good food. The starter menu is quite extensive and you will find all kinds of foods that could often serve as a meal on their own. The starter items at Mystic Celt include (as a small sampling) Tropical Shrimp, Bruchetta, Mini Cheeseburgers, Quesadillas, Buffalo Wings, Cajun Fingers, Calamari, Flautas, Smoked Salmon, and a Chicken Lettuce Leaf Wrap for the carb conscious diners.

And that was just a example of the starter menu! Salad choices are varied as well, with unique items such as Goat Cheese Salad, Whiskey and Citrus Glazed Chicken Salad, and Crab and Mandarin Orange Martini Salad. There are more traditional salads, too.

If you are hungry for a burger, you can build your own at Mystic Celt or choose from other sandwiches and wraps. There are numerous entrees with a British flair such as Bangers and Mash, Shepherd's Pie, and Fish & Chips. If you would rather have steak, chops, lamb, salmon, or other traditional entrees, they are found on the menu.

If you would like a unique kind of meal, try the Russian Tea Time Restaurant on East Adams Street. The biggest problem will be deciding what you want to order from the menu. If you have never had Russian food, this will be a real treat. Just a sampling of the menu items and what they are:

Ukrainian Borscht is a soup with carrots, beets, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, and cabbage served with sour cream.

Blinchiki is crepes that have been filled with caramelized onions and ground beef with avocado cream.

Smoked Duck Strudel is duck and chicken breast in phyllo dough along with raisins, walnuts and wine.

Uzbek Domlama is a vegetarian stew made of beets, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, etc. and slow cooked.

Moldavian Meatballs are made with ground chicken and cooked in a sweet and sour sauce. They are served with kasha beet salad and a salad of white beans.

The menu is extensive and each dish is as good as the last, so be prepared to spend a little more time than usual actually looking at the menu.

The Berghoff Restaurant on West Adams Street serves traditional German food as well as American favorites found in fine eating establishments. Some of the German foods on the entree menu include Wiener Schnitzel (veal cutlet served with creamed spinach and fried potatoes) and Sauerbraten (roast sirloin with sweet and sour gravy served with spaetzle).

Other menu possibilities include Chicken Schnitzel, Corned Beef, and of course a selection of sausages (wurst) that makes German food memorable. Choose from the favorites of bratwurst, knockwurst, or thuringer. Many of the wursts are served with sauerkraut, another customary German food.
