Food on St. Simons Island, Georgia
Monday, September 19, 2005

After a day of seeing all the sights that St. Simons Island has to offer, you will find that there are also plenty of restaurants from which to choose for your meals. This is a fabulous place to visit and the food is spectacular as well.

Blackwater Grill found in Redfern Village opens its doors daily at 5:30 p.m. so dinner is all that is served. There are many good selections for an appetizer, but try something different if possible. This would include the "Blackwater Sundae" that is Brunswick Stew with homemade slaw on top; Fried Green Tomatoes; Shrimp and Grits; Boudin Fritters, and many more choices.

After the appetizer, you may enjoy gumbo, a salad, or a soup such as Black Bean and Sausage Soup. After all that comes the entree and you will be lucky if you can even make a choice between things like Jambalaya, Low Country Boil (shrimp, sausage, potatoes, and corn), Crawfish, Crabcakes, Cajun Rubbed Ribs, and many other entrees.

At Mullet Bay Seafood Restaurant, you will also have an incredibly huge choice of menu items. The restaurant is found on Ocean Boulevard. You will not have any trouble finding the kind of seafood you enjoy here as well as some specialties. Appetizer winners (there are more than two dozen appetizer selections!) include Coconut Shrimp with Pineapple Sauce, Conch Fritters, Mahi Fingers, Jalapeno Poppers, Spinach Dip, and Quesadillas.

For your entree, you will find pasta on the menu as well as many kinds of salads for a lighter meal. These include Chicken, Shrimp, or Tuna Caesar; Chicken, Shrimp, or Tuna Greek Salad; Cobb Salad; and more. Gourmet burgers and Po-Boys are found on the menu by the dozens as well as seafood platters. (Are you beginning to see the extent of this menu?)

Just a few of the seafood choices include shrimp, crab, oysters, scallops, catfish, clam strips, and an entire "Fish Camp" Platter served with fries, slaw, and hush puppies. The seafood on this platter is shrimp, oysters, scallops, mahi, clam strips, and deviled crab. It is doubtful you will have space for dessert after eating here, but if you do, try the Key Lime Pie or Chocolate Cake with White Chocolate Drizzle.

George's Mediterranean Cafe is also in Redfern Village. For starters, try Oysters Olympia (topped with creamed spinach and Hollandaise!); Calamari; battered Greek cheese with brandy called Saganki; or other Mediterranean specialties such as Dolmathes, and Spanakopita.

The menu offers various soups and salads (including Greek Chicken Lemon Soup and Country Greek Salad.) Also on the menu are the more American pastas such as Lasagna, Spaghetti, Manicotti, and other pasta choices.

Whatever entree you choose, it will be accompanied by a salad, sauteed vegetables, and either pasta or parmesan potatoes. On the entree menu you will find Greek favorites such as Moussaka (eggplant with ground beef, cheese, sauce, and spices); Dolmathes (grape leaves stuffed with ground meat, veal, and served with orzo); Chicken Corfu (chicken stuffed with crabmeat and feta cheese with garlic cream sauce); and a selection of veal, seafood, and lamb dishes.

These were just a few of the many excellent restaurants that are found on St. Simons Island. Take a moment to research the menus of these and others and the incredible food you have on vacation will be one of your best memories.
