The Food of Niagara Falls
Sunday, September 18, 2005

If a trip to Niagara Falls, New York, is in your future, definitely consider having one of your meals at the revolving dining room of the 520 ft. high "Skylon Tower." If at all possible, dine here after dark when the falls are illuminated.

Stop by the observation deck (775 ft. above the falls) before sitting down for dinner. You will be choosing from more than one dining room with somewhat differing levels of affordability, so do your homework ahead of time and know where it is you want to have your meal.

If you choose the upscale revolving dining room, your appetizer choice will range from Les Escargots Aux Herbes et Beurre a l'Ail to Shrimp and Scallops with Garlic and Tomato to Smoked Salmon. Appetizers cost between $11 and $15 American dollars.

A bowl of soup (French Onion; Crab, Lobster, and Clam; Potato and Leek, etc.) will average $10 while one of the salads offered on the menu (Romaine, Chef's, Greek) will also cost about $10.

An entree of fresh salmon will cost $37 while a combination of scallops, shrimp, and lobster tail will cost over $50. Other menu choices include steak, prime rib, chicken, pork tenderloins, and rack of lamb. Dessert choices will include baked cheesecake, pecan pie, cake, and ice cream to name a few.

If you would prefer a buffet, try the restaurant at the very top of the Skylon. It is called the Summit Suite Dinner Buffet. 2005 buffet prices (available from the end of May through October 8 and only Saturday evenings during the cold months) are $36.95 for an adult buffet and $13.85 for children aged 12 and under. You will still be overlooking the Falls, but your restaurant will not be revolving.

Buffet choices will include Prime Rib of Beef Au Jus, Salmon, Shrimp, Octopus, Crab Legs, a variety of hot dishes, and many salads from which to choose. Save room after your buffet to select from many desserts including cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Pecan Tarts, Tiramisu Cake, fruit salad, trifle, etc.

If heights are bothersome to you, or you can't afford higher restaurant prices, you may want to try the Goose's Roost Family Restaurant. Two locations are on Fourth Street and Niagara Falls Blvd. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

A breakfast special of two eggs, toast, and your choice of meat will cost under $4 and the other breakfast choices are just as affordable. The lunch menu includes the usual lunch fare of sandwiches, etc. and for dinner you can choose steak, fish, various chicken dishes, etc. generally all under $10.

Duncan's Restaurant and Tavern is a themed eatery and the theme is racing. The menu will start with the "pace lap" from which you can choose from starters called "Crankshaft" (chicken, cheese, and sour cream in a crisp shell); Lug Nuts (breaded onions); Peeling Out Pizza Fingers; plus many starters including appropriately named wings, nachos, quesadillas, and more, most of them under $5.

Also on the menu are entrees and sandwiches, subs, burgers, and ribs. The menu additionally features Mexican choices like the High Bank Burrito, Pit Pass Mexican Pizza, and the Earnhardt Enchilada. Prices here are quite affordable as well.
