Food For Thought, Really
Saturday, September 17, 2005

By Christina VanGinkel

If conversation at your family dinner table is nonexistent, or worse, consists of nothing more than a grunt or a grumbled pass me this, or hand me that, I have the perfect item for you, which is if bringing conversation back into your life is a goal you wish to achieve. Considering that when you all sit down at the table to indulge in a meal as being one of the few times you are all gathered together in a single space, Food For Thought by Julienne Smith takes this opportunity and exploits it of all its usefulness.

Fundamentally, a recipe box, Food For Thought is filled with 200 recipe cards that each has a conversation starter inscribed on it, meant to stimulate table guests to open his or her mouth for dialogue along with eating the food placed in front of them. I have heard from spouses that after being married for long lengths of time, decades even, meal times are if but one thing, they are boring. The food may be good, even great, but it is too often eaten in silence. Also, consider families with teens, or even young children, who dread meal times because of the forced silences and awkward spans of quiet. After purchasing Food For Thought though, these same people are now looking forward to sitting down to dinner, as are their spouses and kids. This simple concept takes that silence and breaks it into a million pieces, each piece a word, a thought, and idea, just waiting to be shared with everyone else fortunate enough to be at the same dinner table.

Consider this, sometimes, when we try to start a conversation on our own, even with people we live with day in and out, we word the question so it seems one sided, or even derogatory, though that was not our intention at all. We live with these people, yet due to the strains of work, school, and other outside influences, coupled with internal strains that take place from small arguments left unresolved, to full blown disturbances, we oftentimes lose our knowledge of how to communicate in a good way with each other. There are no winners in a situation like this if left unresolved. With Food For Thought, each card included is designed so that there are no wrong answers, nothing to bring out the battle gloves, or rolled eyes. This makes the conversation flow, letting everyone feel confident enough to join in. In addition, if I had to pick one word to sum up the style of the questions and thoughts put forth included in this outstanding collection, I would have to say 'positive'. Each question or task looks for the good in you and family members,

This collection is in an easy to story, easy to use recipe style box and is available for less than twenty dollars. It can be found right here at iFoodGifts.com. Simply click on the 'Food Shopping' link to the right, and then click on 'other shopping links'. Type in 'Food For Thought' in the search on the left and you will be directed to a link to order. Check it out right away as it is currently on sale for the unbelievable price of $13.57. I cannot think of a better way to spend that sum than on family communication. Revamp your mealtime, your life essentially, and never set the dinner table again without including this simple recipe styled box as the main ingredient.
