The Fabulous Food of Miami Beach
Tuesday, September 20, 2005

No matter what your cuisine of choice happens to be, you will be able to find some excellent meals in Miami Beach. From sushi to Mexican food and Cuban to New International, you will not be leaving the city with a hungry stomach.

Begin at Yuca Restaurant on Lincoln Road if you want to enjoy a Cuban cuisine experience. On the appetizer part of menu are things such as Yuca Greens that are covered with a Caribbean Guava dressing; Dona Glorias Frijoles Negros (black bean soup with a rice pancake, sour cream, and scallions); homemade empanadas with jalepeno sauce; lobster croquettes with pineapple salsa; their specialty "Seafood Puteria" (calamari and shrimp with white wine, avocados, etc. in a plantain container); Sugar Cane Skewered Guava Shrimp; and many other wonderful Cuban starters.

Entrees at Yuca include Guava BBQ Baby Back Ribs, Churrasco, Yuca Rellana, Pork Tenderloin, many fish and seafood choices, Rabo Encendido (oxtail with wine sauce!); and numerous additional choices (lamb, chicken, and salmon to name a few).

Did you save room for dessert? Try Tres Leches de Chocolate (chocolate sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk and topped with chocolate mousse and chocolate ice cream), custards and puddings, ice creams, and more.

If you are in the mood for seafood, Monty's on Alton Road might be of interest to you. Soups to start your meal include She Crab Soup and Conch Chowder and there are several other starter choices. When it comes time to choose an entree, the menu includes many seafood choices including Mahi-Mahi, Snapper, Grouper, Salmon, Scallops, and Shrimp. Lobster, steak, and chicken dishes are on the menu, too.

If your budget will allow, one of the most memorable food stops in Miami Beach is Emeril's Miami Beach on Collins Avenue. Have lunch or dinner at one of Food Network star, Emeril Lagasse's restaurants.

As is evident with his television show and the menus from all his restaurants, Mr. Lagasse enjoys Creole and New Orleans cuisine. Appetizers include dishes such as Creole Marinated Calamari with New Orleans Olive Salad; Andouille Sausage (homemade!); Lobster Cheesecake, Bleu Cheese Oysters, and an excellent selection of additional appetizers.

For your entree you will be choosing from a number of incredible choices. Entrees will cost on an average of $25 to $40. To name just a few, try Niman Ranch Double-Cut Pork Chop served with caramelized sweet potatoes and Chili Mole Sauce; Sweet Barbecued Glazed Atlantic Salmon served with Andouille Sausage Potato Hash and Spicy Onion Crust; or an exceptional bouillabaisse with shrimp, fish, mussels, and clams.

The food choices on Emeril's menu are distinctive in their descriptions of the food . . . imagine a veal chop served with mushroom tamale pie and chili melon slaw. Or bread pudding with warm whiskey sauce and crumbled pralines. Sometimes the answer to "what's in a name?" is "many wonderful things!"

If you are planning to visit Miami Beach, you really need to do your homework and know what is available at the various restaurants so that you will not be wasting time trying to decide where to eat. Just reacquainting myself with these menus for this food article made me terribly hungry; imagine how it will be when you are actually sitting in a restaurant having to decide!
