Wanted: Low-Cholesterol Foods
Sunday, August 28, 2005

It seems as though just when I think I have my cholesterol in check, the American Heart Association changes their guidelines on what is an acceptable total cholesterol number.

If, like me, you are one watching your cholesterol, you may feel as though all of the best tasting foods are off limits. On the contrary, there are many delicious foods that are low in cholesterol--you just need to know what to look for when you go to the grocery store. You can keep your cholesterol in numbers in line while enjoying low-cholesterol foods like these:

1.Egg products. If you're craving eggs, you may already know that eggs are notoriously high in cholesterol. Fortunately for you, there are great tasting egg substitute products in your grocer's dairy section. With a product like Eggbeaters or Ener-G Egg Replacer, you can make your favorite egg recipes as often as you'd like-- and the best part is, some of these products can be purchased with tasty flavorings like chives or onions and green peppers.

2. Garlic. Not only is garlic full of flavor, but it has been proven to help lower cholesterol. Garlic can be added to a variety of dishes or eaten raw if you love it (just be sure to wash your hands and brush your teeth afterwards). Try to make garlic a part of your daily diet if you are trying to lower your cholesterol.

3. Whole grain cereals. Check your grocery store's cereal aisle and you will find that there are mnay whole grain hot and cold cereals available these days. Recent studies show that the whole grain oats in oatmeal can help to "sweep" cholesterol out of your system. Add some strawberries, bananas or blueberries to your cereal to make yourself a healthy and hearty breakfast.

4. Condiments. Most condiments, like mustard and salsa, have little or no cholesterol and can be used in a variety of recipes. Salsa in particular can be used for a lot more than just dipping tortilla chips (I personally love adding a dollop of salsa on top of my cholesterol free scrambled eggs). Low-cholesterol butter and margarine products like Take Control and Benecol can allow you to butter your bread and eat it too. Even products like cholesterol-free mayonnaise are available (try Duke's Reduced Fat brand) so your favorite tuna salad doesn't have to be off limits anymore.

5. Meatless products. Cholesterol free meatless burgers and chicken patties taste great if you know how to prepare them. Boca meatless burgers come in patty form or ground burger form so you can make all of your favorite ground "meat" favorites like chili and tacos with no cholesterol.

Tips for shopping for low-cholesterol foods:

Get in the habit of reading food labels carefully the next time you go grocery shopping. You may be surprised at just how many low cholesterol foods are out there.
Try shopping at gourmet and health food stores to find a larger selection of low-cholesterol foods.

Even if you're not a vegetarian or a vegan, stop by the vegetarian section of your favorite grocery store. Since cholesterol is found in animal-based products like meat and dairy products, the vegan alternatives, which feature alternatives like soy, are naturally low in cholesterol.
