The S'mores Craze
Thursday, August 11, 2005

Is it just me, or have you noticed that S'mores are back in vogue again? If you were ever a Girl Scout-- well, if you were ever a kid for that matter-- you probably remember eating S'mores at least once in your life. You know what I'm talking about-- that tasty campfire treat made with toasted marshmallows, Hershey's chocolate bars and graham crackers. Back in the day, S'mores were considered a very special treat indeed. Well this old time delicious treat is not just for kids anymore.

Case in point: The other day I had lunch with an old friend at a chain restaurant, Cosi, known for their unique sandwiches and their out of this world lattes (I had roast turkey and brie cheese on flatbread while my friend dined on sesame ginger chicken).

After eating our sandwiches, both my friend and I agreed we had a sweet tooth (it was her birthday so we figured dessert was justified) so we checked out the menu and voila-- there they were -- S'mores! We ordered them right up and my friend and I had a blast toasting our marshmallows on the mini hibachi and then sandwiching them with chocolate and graham crackers. A few other patrons at the restaurants saw us eating our S'mores and went and ordered some as well.

But the S'mores craze doesn't end there. I went home and read a magazine later that day, only to find myself engrossed in an article with a recipe for Raspberry Smores. Just think about it-- you take your regular S'mores recipe but add some fresh raspberries to the middle as well. How delicious does that sound? Delicious enough for me to make a mad dash to my favorite grocery store to pick up some raspberries, that's for sure!

And just when I finished salivating from that idea, my sister in law told me about her favorite version of S' mores-- made with pound cake. That's right, she uses pound cake in lieu of the graham crackers, first toasting the pound cake until it's lightly browned (either outside on the grill or on the stove in a frying pan). She then tops the cake with marshmallow cream, some chocolate and another piece of pound cake and flips the whole concoction over, toasting it until it's all melted together. One bite and you're hooked, is what my sister in law tells me.

And if that's not enough for you, I spoke to my neighbor across the street after she went to another chain restaurant, The Melting Pot, the other night. The Melting Pot is known for their divine fondues-- and apparently they have their own version of S'mores on their menu. How about a chocolate-marshmallow fondue topped with graham cracker bits? You then dip graham crackers into this heavenly, melted mixture. Yeah, I'll be going there.

And check your local grocery store out-- even mainstream kid's snacks like Pop Tarts and Toaster Strudel come in S'mores flavor now. In fact, everywhere I look lately there's S'mores. But I'm not complaining. In these times when low carb is all the rage, I still leave room for this very special treat every once in a while.
