Shopping a Variety of Grocery Stores
Wednesday, August 10, 2005

By Christina VanGinkel

My daughter is still home, her husband not yet called back to work out of town. This is due to parts for his job not being ready. While this might seem like a hardship, it is at least giving us some extra time these last two weeks to spend some time shopping together. Last night, we headed to town to do some grocery shopping. Our first stop was a small discount store called 'Save a Lot'. They carry just about everything a typical grocery store would, minus many brand names. Upon entering, the first thing you notice is people bagging their own groceries at a counter near the front of the store. Boxes are provided free, or you can purchase plastic bags with handles for ten cents each. By carrying predominantly their own off brand label, with a mix of a few brand name products, and not employing baggers, they are able to keep the prices on many of their products lower than the competition. The store here is actually known for it meat counter, as you can always find a nice cut of meat for a good price. Part of this I believe is that the local manager worked for another small store that is also known for its quality meat, before taking on the venture to manage this store. I rarely stop at this store, no real reason, but after being reminded of their decent selection at low prices, I will be making an effort to shop there more frequently.

We walked through the store rather quickly, as my daughter had a list made out with certain objectives to be purchased at this particular store. We were then going to head to Wal-Mart to finish her shopping, when I suggested to stop first at another local grocery that was just across from the mall the 'Save a Lot' was located in. While she had been in this store in the past, she had never actually shopped it since becoming the main chef for a family of her own. When she asked me why I liked it so much, I was quick to tell her they always had fresh produce, a great deli, and their choices of products such as spices was huge, along with a cheese counter that was just to die for! A specialty store in many ways their prices were still a bargain on most products.

In the end, we still had to stop at Wal-Mart, as neither of the two stores carried a specific dip she had on her list, and she still needed juice boxes for my grandson. Both other stores carried these, but not near the price she knew she could get them for there. Our entire shopping trip did not take us very long, even though we stopped at three stores, but we had no small children with us, and she had a list that she stuck to pretty well, save for a few additions at the second store.

When shopping for groceries, variety really is the spice of life. Do not be afraid to try a new store, or shop online for something. No one store can carry everything one wants. From discount to specialty, it reminded us both that shopping does not have to be the same old routine each week.
