Pretzel Power
Friday, August 12, 2005

Pretzels are one of my favorite snack foods of all time. I even have pictures of myself as a toddler, barely able to walk and clutching a pretzel stick tightly in my hand. Over the years, even though there are many more exotic snacks on the market, I have stuck with pretzels as my number one choice. I like how they come in so many shapes and flavors, I like how crunchy they are, I like how they taste with a cold bottle of beer, and I like the fact that they are fat free and therefore one of the (relatively) healthier snack foods around.

Speaking of pretzel shape, did you ever wonder why there need to be so many? Do the different shapes each have a different taste? I personally don't think so, but I have a friend who swears that they do. In fact, she won't eat pretzel rods (the long, thick pretzel sticks) because she says they don't taste like pretzels to her. I don't really care what shape the pretzels are; I pretty much just grab a bag without even looking. For those of you who do care, you can get the following pretzel shapes: twists (both regular size, mini, and the thick Bavarian style), sticks, rods, braided, waffle, and pieces (which are basically just randomly-shaped broken-off pieces of pretzel).

One of my favorite pretzel brands is Rold Gold. I like the taste, first and foremost, and the fact that these pretzels don't leave me unreasonably thirsty and dry-mouthed like a majority of the other brands do. I'm not sure if this is due to some extra step in the Rold Gold baking process, or if it's just me, but this is definitely the case for me. I also like how Rold Gold jumped on the flavored pretzel bandwagon. Their cheddar cheese twists and honey mustard twists are two of the best-tasting pretzels out there!

Another great brand in terms of flavor variety is Snyder's of Hanover. This company now has more than 25 different pretzel flavors, including unusual ones such as creamy caramel, honey BBQ, garlic bread, buttermilk ranch, and jalapeno. Have you ever heard of creamy caramel pretzels? Or jalapeno pretzels? That's what makes Snyder's so good: they are willing to take chances with different flavors. I also like Snyder's because they of their organic pretzel line. The organic pretzel lineup consists of wonderful products that not only taste delicious, but are pretty healthy to boot. I particularly like the honey wheat sticks and the pumpernickel & onion sticks. If you've never tried these, you are definitely missing out on a fantastic treat!

And who could forget about soft pretzels? I absolutely love soft pretzels and used to look forward to going to sports events, concerts, and movies just to be able to buy these snacks. One of the best things I ever learned to do was make soft pretzels from scratch in my bread machine, which means that I can now enjoy them any time I want.

The bottom line is that pretzels are not the same boring snack that they were years ago. Try a new flavor today!
