New Refrigerator vs. Old
Tuesday, August 16, 2005

By Christina VanGinkel

I have been the proud owner of my new fridge for a whole of four days, not by design, but because I was foolish enough to clean my old one with a chisel and hammer, (No joke and you can read the whole story a few blogs back!). Little did I realize just how much I was in need of this new refrigerator, until the very first evening, after we had it installed for about two hours, and I opened the door of it and was amazed at how updated and efficient the design of this new wonder was. My old fridge had one bottom drawer for fruits and vegetables. The new one has three drawers, one for vegetables, one for fruits, and one for lunchmeats. It also has a dairy door on the door for butter or cheese. The door itself is part of what is so amazing about this fridge in comparison to my old one though. I can actually fit a whole gallon jug of milk on the door. Actually, I could fit a couple of gallon milk jugs on the door. For my family, this is a big deal, as we go through a gallon of milk a day, and in my old fridge, we were lucky if we could find room to store one extra gallon besides the gallon we were drinking. This meant a trip to town every other day just for milk. Not anymore! In addition, with the prices of gasoline soaring these last few weeks, this is perfect timing. I will have my new refrigerator's cost refunded in no time just through time and gas saved!
The way the door shuts is also a significant sign that it was definitely time for my old fridge to go. This door sucks shut! When it closes, there is no doubt that it is closed tight, which can only mean the cold air is not seeping out, which also means this one is going to take a lot less energy to keep its interior cold. I am now wondering if that is why items seemed to spoil on the quick side in the old one. Maybe it was not even keeping the food as cold as it should have been.

The freezer on this one is also much colder. We bought a gallon jug of ice cream because this freezer is actually large enough to hold it. Our old fridge could not accommodate a whole gallon, and when we would purchase a quart container, if we did not eat it right away, when we went back for more, it would be frozen, but just barely. Scooping it out was never a problem as it was the consistency of soft serve. This new freezer not only accommodates the gallon size, the ice cream is frozen! We never realized just how lacking in cooling the old refrigerator/freezer was, until we could compare it to this new one.

If your fridge is on the old side, do not do what I did to get a new one, but take the time to check out all the added advantages of a brand new one when compared to what your family is using now.
